BaFin, the Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht, is the German regulator that supervises banks, lenders and other financial firms and holds their permissions. Each permission has a number that sits in a public register, so you can see which authority authorises a firm before you apply. Commerzbank publishes its permission as BAK Nr. 100005. Berliner Volksbank, Consorsbank, Hanseatic Bank and Postbank also sit under BaFin on BorrowCue.
